South Sudan Justice, Minister Michael Makuei Lueth, has rejected a legal petition filed by lawyers for detained former Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel.
Hon. Makuei stated in a letter dated March 11, 2026, that the petition used “disrespectful” and “uncouth” language. He also criticised the lawyers for posting the document on social media before the official review, saying it broke procedure.
“The petition on its face is written in disrespectful, impolite and uncouth language that is unbecoming and not acceptable in all standards,” part of the letter reads.
Hon. Makuei demanded a written apology and an explanation of how the petition reached the public. Until then, he said, the ministry will not act on the case.
Since November 12, 2025, Bol Mel has been under house arrest following his removal from office and loss of his military ranks. His lawyers argue he is being held unlawfully without charges, family contact, or medical care. They also claim his assets were seized without court approval.
The petition asked for Bol Mel’s release or for him to be brought before a court.
